Preserving Muskegon's Natural Heritage

The Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve (MLNP) stands as a testament to environmental restoration. Once a site of industrial waste, this 17-acre sanctuary now serves as a vital ecological corridor, offering the Muskegon community a serene space for education, recreation, and quiet reflection amidst the beauty of Michigan's shoreline.

Preserving Our Legacy, Growing Our Future

Our Legacy

The Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society (MERES) was formed as an outgrowth of the Muskegon Conservation Club. When the club acquired land that was to become the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve in 1997, it was a community dump. With the help of generous contributors and many hours of volunteer labor, this dump was gradually converted to a beautiful natural setting.

Our Mission

The Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society inspires individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy, discover, and cherish the natural environment. Whether through school programs, community education events, fishing, biking, or hiking, the Preserve provides a space to discover nature and its benefits.

Our Future

Through 100% volunteer effort and donations, we aim to enhance our preservation work, educational efforts, and recreation opportunities. Current projects include a microforest, a Yurt for educational purposes, a native plant demonstration garden, and handicapped access.
